About Friends Day Centre

Friends Day Centre is a non-profit special care, activity and therapy centre based on the grounds of Alexandra Hospital in Maitland, Cape Town. Founded in 1959 by Lorna Ingram, who started a small facility for her son David and four other children with special needs, the centre has grown over more than six decades into a home away from home for up to 120 learners.

The centre supports children and adults with severe to profound intellectual and/or physical disabilities, including cerebral palsy, spina bifida and epilepsy, among others. Learners range in age from as young as two years old and benefit from education, personal skills development and a range of therapies, including physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, delivered by a dedicated team of more than 30 staff members.

The aim of Friends Day Centre has always been to enhance the quality of life of every learner, to encourage a degree of independence, and to give families the peace of mind that their loved ones are in safe, caring hands.
